Lung Ultrasound

Lung Ultrasound
Our Lung Ultrasound course is a comprehensive course that combines theoretical knowledge with practical, hands-on experience. Participants will learn to accurately identify common lung pathologies, utilise POCUS for rapid decision-making in emergency and critical care settings, and integrate lung ultrasound into their daily practice.
Course Description
The Lung Ultrasound Course is designed for healthcare professionals looking to enhance their diagnostic skills in respiratory conditions using point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). Lung ultrasound has become a critical tool in the evaluation of respiratory distress, pleural effusions, pneumothorax, and other lung pathologies, offering real-time, non-invasive diagnostics at the bedside.
This comprehensive course combines theoretical knowledge with practical, hands-on experience. Participants will learn to accurately identify common lung pathologies, utilise POCUS for rapid decision-making in emergency and critical care settings, and integrate lung ultrasound into their daily practice.
Course Objectives
- Master Lung Ultrasound Techniques: Learn the fundamental techniques for performing lung ultrasound and interpreting findings.
- Identify Key Pathologies: Gain expertise in recognising conditions such as pneumothorax, pleural effusion, pulmonary oedema, consolidation, and interstitial syndrome.
- Utilise POCUS in Clinical Practice: Understand how to apply lung ultrasound in a variety of clinical scenarios, including emergency, critical care, and ward-based settings.
- Simulated and Real-Patient Practice: Gain hands-on experience with both simulated cases and real patient scanning, enhancing diagnostic confidence.
- Understand Limitations and Pitfalls: Learn the limitations of lung ultrasound and how to avoid common diagnostic pitfalls.
Target Audience
This course is aimed at:
- Emergency medicine clinicians
- Critical care physicians
- Respiratory physicians
- Anaesthetists
- General practitioners (GPs) working in acute care
- Any healthcare professional involved in the management of respiratory conditions
Course Format
The Lung Ultrasound Course is delivered through a blended learning approach, combining online theoretical modules with a one-day, hands-on practical workshop.
- Pre-Course Online Learning
Participants complete a series of online modules covering:- Basic lung anatomy and ultrasound principles
- The physics of lung ultrasound: A-lines, B-lines, pleural line
- Pathology identification: pneumothorax, pleural effusion, pulmonary oedema, consolidation
- Clinical indications and applications of lung ultrasound in acute and chronic settings
- Review of relevant literature and current guidelines
- In-Person Practical Training Day
A full day of practical learning and scanning, structured as follows:- Morning Session: Lecture and Demonstrations
- Brief review of lung ultrasound principles and key findings
- Real-time scanning demonstrations on healthy volunteers and patients
- Introduction to ultrasound machines and probe selection for lung imaging
- Afternoon Session: Hands-On Scanning
- Live Patient Scanning: Perform lung ultrasound on real patients with various respiratory conditions.
- Simulated Pathology Cases: Use advanced simulation techniques to diagnose conditions that may not be readily available during live scanning, such as pneumothorax or large pleural effusions.
- Real-Time Feedback: Receive personalised feedback from experienced POCUS educators, ensuring the proper technique and correct interpretation of findings.
- Case-Based Discussions: Interactive discussions on complex cases, reviewing how ultrasound findings fit into broader clinical decision-making.
- Morning Session: Lecture and Demonstrations
- Post-Course Portfolio Development
Upon completion, participants will build a personal portfolio of lung ultrasound scans, which can be used for skill validation and certification purposes. Continued mentorship is available to support further learning and development.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Confidently perform lung ultrasound examinations and interpret key findings.
- Identify critical lung pathologies, including pneumothorax, pleural effusion, pulmonary oedema, and consolidation.
- Use lung ultrasound to guide clinical management in emergency and critical care settings.
- Understand the strengths and limitations of lung ultrasound in diagnosing respiratory conditions.
- Integrate POCUS into their practice, improving patient care and outcomes in respiratory conditions.
Course Accreditation
This course is accredited by recognised professional bodies, and participants will receive a certificate of completion. The course supports ongoing professional development and can be used for CPD accreditation or to contribute towards relevant ultrasound certifications, such as FUSIC (Focused Ultrasound in Intensive Care) or FAMUS (Focused Acute Medicine Ultrasound).
