POCUS Boot Camps are intensive, hands-on training sessions designed to accelerate clinicians’ ultrasound skills. Over two days, participants scan real patients under expert supervision, allowing them to gather a variety of cases that would typically take months to collect. Some pathologies, such as pulmonary oedema, are simulated using techniques developed over the last four years to ensure trainees experience critical scenarios in a controlled environment. By the end of the camp, participants will have built a significant portfolio of scans, with each study recorded for certification and progress tracking. The Boot Camps provide concentrated learning, real-time feedback, and the opportunity to rapidly build proficiency in point-of-care ultrasound.
Course Overview
POCUS Boot Camps are immersive, hands-on training sessions designed to accelerate the learning curve for clinicians using point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). These intensive two-day sessions focus on scanning real patients under the close supervision of POCUS experts. The boot camps offer a concentrated experience that allows participants to rapidly build their ultrasound skills in a clinical environment, collecting cases at a pace that would typically take months of regular practice to achieve.
Throughout the Boot Camp, participants will scan a diverse range of real patients, learning to identify common and critical pathologies. Since some pathologies, such as frank pulmonary oedema or a hyperdynamic left ventricle in a septic patient, may not be readily available for scanning outside of high-intensity wards, certain conditions will be simulated. Over the past four years, we have developed highly effective simulation techniques specifically for POCUS courses, allowing trainees to experience and learn from realistic scenarios that mirror what they might encounter in critical care or emergency settings.
By the end of the two days, trainees will have amassed a significant portfolio of scans, equivalent to what a highly motivated trainee might collect over a six-month period. Every ultrasound study will be recorded in the trainee’s portfolio, ensuring comprehensive documentation of their practical experience. This documentation is vital for tracking progress, certifying skills, and building confidence in POCUS applications in real-world clinical practice.
The Boot Camp not only accelerates skill acquisition but also offers invaluable opportunities for real-time feedback and guidance from experienced POCUS educators, ensuring a robust learning experience.
This course plan aims to equip participants with the essential skills required to perform and interpret ultrasound examinations confidently. Through a combination of lectures, hands-on practice, and assessments, attendees will leave the bootcamp well-prepared to utilise ultrasound technology in their clinical practice.
